LAND ADVENTURES
When you don't want to go to the beach, Argentario, thanks to its strategic location, offers many other alternative day trips. You can take trips to Monte Argentario (630 meters above sea level), where you can first stop to visit the Convent of the Passionist Friars. You can then hike along the many marked mountain trails through green forests where you'll forget you're at the seaside and suddenly be dazzled by breathtaking views that stretch all the way to Corsica.
The towns of Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano are enchanting and steeped in history. During their rule over these lands, the Spanish built numerous fortresses and watchtowers, both in the towns and along the entire coastal area between Ansedonia and Talamone, to ensure their control of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Among these strikingly beautiful structures are Forte Filippo, Forte Stella, and the Rocca Aldobrandesca in Porto Ercole, and the Spanish Fortress in Porto Santo Stefano.
If you're looking for culture, there are also wonderful museums, churches, and monuments, not only in Argentario but also in nearby Orbetello. Just a stone's throw away are short trips to the most beautiful villages of the Maremma Grossetana, such as Magliano in Toscana, Capalbio, Saturnia, and a little further on, Scansano, Pitigliano, Montemerano, Sovana, and Sorano, also rich in history and beauty. There are also numerous events, festivals, fairs, markets, and shops that stay open until late at night.
